MyConnectivity and the Commune de Berdorf team up to eliminate network “White Spots” and improve connectivity with “ultra-high-speed-broadband-networks” in Luxembourg.

White spots are areas in the country which are not covered by infrastructures for ultra-high-speed-broadband connectivity, i.e., fibre, cable for internet use, or the more recent 5G fixed wireless access connectivity options.

A joint project between MyConnectivity and Berdorf now aims to drill deep into the reasons for that lack of connectivity, aiming to find solutions for Berdorf and other communes, that are not yet optimally connected. The MyConnectivity-Berdorf pilot project will result in a toolbox featuring a variety of possible solutions to cover white spots, which can be used by all those communes in Luxembourg with connectivity issues.

Today, just 5% of the territory of Luxembourg remain uncovered by those future-proof communication infrastructures, which is a top value in the EU comparison. Affected communes were identified via a geographical survey of network deployment developed by the Luxembourg Regulation Institute (ILR).

Berdorf was singled out as the most reactive and most interested commune in collaborating on the pilot project. Only 40% of the population of Berdorf is covered by ultra-high-speed broadband, meaning approximately 400 households are targeted for the pilot project.

Before the project started, the commune and MyConnectivity in June 2023 signed a “letter of Intent” agreeing to collaborate closely on a voluntary basis.

Julien Larios (MyConnectivity), Joe Nilles (Bourgmestre de la Commune de Berdorf), Susy Seyler-Grommes (Administration Communale de Berdorf), Geraldine Knudson (MyConnectivity), and Daniel Scharff (Administration Communale de Berdorf) signing the letter of intent.

MyConnectivity has commissioned an engineering bureau to analyse the challenges and identify solutions, focusing on cost-effectiveness, collaboration, and innovation.

As well as identifying white spots, the project will also analyse gaps in knowledge and skills or resources. These will be transposed to a Toolkit that will be indispensable in allowing MyConnectivity to scale such projects to other communes.

The Toolkit will show how the Connectivity Roadmap managed to help Berdorf and present details of the approach used, the steps taken and the duration of the project. It will also provide information on how to start a project with MyConnectivity.
